In 41st, two candidates with genuine differences

Democrat Gerald Policoff and Republican Ryan Aument agree Harrisburg is a mess, but they'd go in opposite directions to fix it.

Whoever wins the election on Nov. 2, there will be a new face in Harrisburg representing the county's 41st District.

Veteran legislator Katie True is stepping down, and Democrat Gerald Policoff and Republican Ryan Aument both want to take her place.

Policoff is a strong advocate of a statewide, single-payer health care plan to replace the current system, which he calls "broken" and "dysfunctional."

He said the United States is the only advanced economic power in the world without universal health care. He favors a plan that is "publicly funded" but "privately delivered."

"If you can do that," Policoff said, "you get rid of the multimillion-dollar CEOs, you get rid of the overlap of multiple companies and you can do bulk purchasing of pharmaceuticals like the VA does. Then you radically bring down the cost of health care, and at the same time, you cover everybody."
